Fifth Grade

Welcome to Fifth Grade here at Kruse Education Center. The students follow a similar schedule of language arts in the morning and math, social studies and/or science in the afternoon. The students are fortunate to have Music or P.E. every other day.

In effort to address different learning styles within each classroom, several teaching strategies are used. In addition, a variety of assessment tools are used in fifth grade, some of which include traditional tests, rubrics, or self reflections.

Fifth grade students are very busy learning a vast amount of information. The fifth grade math curriculum covers concepts such as: decimals, multiplication of decimals, coordinate graphing, fractions, probability, and geometry. Students continue to study multiplication and division on a daily basis.

Our Language Arts curriculum provides direct instruction in phonics, fluency, vocabulary, literary elements, reading strategies, and text comprehension. Students also have daily time to read independently at their own level. In addition to the Harcourt materials, students may also read Junior Great Books, historical fiction, FOSS Science stories, and other theme novels. Writing instruction will include lessons and practice in spelling, grammar, usage, and mechanics. Students will apply these writing skills to sentence, paragraph, and essay structure. They will also learn information skills and apply them in writing research papers.

Within the content areas of science and social studies, a good portion of time is spent on discussion, hands-on-activities, and research. In addition, the students will be learning how to take and organize notes which they will use to study. Throughout the year, various projects and reports are used to expand learning in these areas.
