Kindergarten

The kindergarten program at Kruse Education Center is a child-oriented one. It is built upon children’s own experience to create significant knowledge. Many different kinds of programs can be found in Kindergartens today, however most focus on the same goals. These goals include providing an orientation to the world of school, developing physical, social, and intellectual competence, and helping the child develop modes of self-expression.

Kindergarten students are provided with experiences that will extend and enable them to continue their individual patterns of development. Since different children grow in different ways and at different rates, our Kindergarten program strives to be a highly personalized one.

In Reading and Language Arts, we will be using the Harcourt Trophies Series which includes instruction in Phonemic Awareness (the relationship between letters and sounds), Phonics (putting sounds together to form words), Oral Reading, Comprehension, Vocabulary, Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Spelling. Our twelve themes include: Self-Discovery, Working Together, Growth and Change, Creativity, Communities, and Explorations.

Our world is changing rapidly in the information age in which we live. The ever-increasing use of technology is creating a new definition of what it means to be mathematically literate. Children need a different curriculum in order to have opportunities for satisfying careers, to be adaptive, productive workers, to be lifelong learners, and to be effective citizens.

In Mathematics, we will be engaged in the Trailblazers program. The goal is to create an educational experience that results in children who are flexible mathematical thinkers, who see connections between the mathematics they learn in school and the thinking they do in everyday life, and who enjoy mathematics. We will be exploring: Numbers and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Data Analysis and Probability, Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Communication, Connections, and Representation.

The Science curriculum is FOSS-Full Option Science System which consists of two modules: Trees and Animals Two by Two. The best way for students to appreciate the scientific enterprise, learn important concepts, and develop the ability to think well is to actively construct ideas through their own inquiries, investigation, and analyses as they explore the natural world.

In Social Studies we will focus on “Me, My Family, My School”. Topics include: self awareness, holidays and celebrations, family roles, school roles, simple maps, and beginning economic concepts.

Students within a class exhibit a wide range of abilities and styles of learning. Therefore, lessons are designed to include activities that are appropriate for individual needs. Also, students learn best when provided with various instructional groupings. Activities are planned for whole-group, small-group, cooperative group, and individual instruction.
